Putnam County
Putnam County Putnam County is in the heart of the Hudson River Valley - famous for its beautiful small towns and rich in colonial history. Before 1812, the area known today has Putnam County was part of the much larger Dutchess County to the north. Originally purchased by Dutch settlers from the Indians in the late 1600’s the land was later sold to the wealthy Philipse family. In 1812 the New York State Legislature declared the 235 square mile piece named for the Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam an independent county.
